What Makes Kenya Coffee Exceptional

Kenya is one of the few countries in the world where specialty coffee quality is not just a niche pursuit but a deeply embedded national system. The Kenya Coffee Research Institute, the Kenya Cooperative Creameries, and decades of Scott Laboratories breeding work have created an agricultural and processing infrastructure that produces some of the world's most distinctive and consistently excellent specialty coffee. The double-washed processing protocol, the SL28 and SL34 varieties, and the cooperative factory model have remained essentially unchanged for fifty years because they work — delivering the intense, complex, structured cup that makes Kenya coffee unmistakable to anyone who has tasted it blind.

Chemoi Factory operates within this system, applying the standard Kenya double-washed protocol to SL28 and SL34 cherry delivered by its smallholder member community. The factory's management team maintains the fermentation timing, washing channel water quality, and raised-bed drying protocols that Kenya's best factories execute with the consistency of a proven formula. The result is a Kenya AB that delivers exactly what the classification promises: balanced, complex, and intensely flavoured.

The Kenyan Coffee Economy

Kenya produces approximately 65,000 tonnes of coffee annually — a small fraction of Ethiopia's or Brazil's output, but disproportionately valuable per kilogram because of quality. Approximately 55% of Kenyan coffee is grown by the 700,000 smallholder farmers who supply cooperative factories like Chemoi. The remainder comes from private estates and individual farms that have increasingly entered specialty markets directly as Kenya's export regulations evolved in the 2010s and 2020s. Both systems produce excellent coffee — the cooperative model through scale and shared infrastructure, the private model through individual farm control and customised processing.
