Suke Quto: One of Ethiopia's Most Celebrated Private Farms
Suke Quto is operated by Tesfaye Bekele and his family in Ethiopia's Guji Zone — one of the country's most geographically distinctive coffee-producing areas. Guji coffees were historically sold as Sidama under the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange classification system, but over the last decade, the zone has been increasingly recognised as a distinct and prestigious origin in its own right. High, consistent elevations (1,900–2,200 metres), a distinct set of heirloom landrace varieties, and the particular combination of forest ecosystems and volcanic soils create a cup character that experienced buyers can distinguish clearly from other southern Ethiopian origins.
Suke Quto is one of the few Guji operations that can be described as a genuine private farm with individual producer traceability — comparable to the best Colombian private estates but set within Ethiopia's forest coffee ecosystem. The farm grows coffee in shade from native forest trees, maintaining the semi-wild growing conditions that produce Ethiopia's most complex cup profiles. Rainforest Alliance and organic certifications reflect Tesfaye Bekele's commitment to environmental stewardship alongside cup quality.
Guji: Ethiopia's Rising Star
Guji was administratively part of Sidama for many years, and its coffees were sold and classified as Sidama at the ECX. The zone gained separate recognition through the persistent advocacy of specialty buyers and importers who identified its distinct terroir expression. Today, "Guji" is one of the most sought-after Ethiopian regional designations in specialty coffee, associated with a profile that combines Sidama-like fruit intensity with an additional savouriness and complexity from the zone's unique soil profile and forest ecosystem.
