Daniso Horsa: 100 Bags a Year, Every Step Personally Overseen — Ethiopia's Most Exclusive Natural

Daniso Horsa produces only 100 bags per year from his farms in Bombe and Damo, Shantawene, Sidama. One of Ethiopia's rarest private-producer lots — blueberry, papaya, honey — and one of the most traceable coffees in the country.

Daniso Horsa: Ethiopia's Private Producer Exception

Ethiopia's coffee supply chain is built around washing stations and community lots — the economic and logistical model that channels hundreds of smallholders' cherries through a central processing point. Individual farm traceability, of the kind common in Colombia or Costa Rica, is rare. Daniso Horsa represents the exception: a dedicated, highly skilled coffee producer who oversees every step of his coffee's journey from cultivation through processing — "an uncommon practice in Ethiopia," as Nero Scuro Specialty Coffees describe him.

Daniso farms two sites in Bensa, Sidama: his primary farm near Bombe, and a second farmsite in the Damo area of Shantawene Kebele (village community). Shantawene village lies between Bombe and Bombe Mountain — the same volcanic highland where Daye Bensa's community lots are also sourced, but from a very different model. While Daye Bensa aggregates 600+ farmers, Daniso's lots are entirely personal: picked by hand from his own trees, sorted, dried, and processed under his direct supervision. The result is one of the most traceable coffees produced anywhere in Ethiopia — a genuine single-farm lot in a country where such things are genuinely rare.

The Scarcity: 100 Bags Per Year

Daniso's total annual production is approximately 100 bags of finished green coffee. This is not a marketing scarcity but a physical reality: a small farm, intensively managed, producing cherry at volumes that a single dedicated producer can personally handle through the full drying and processing workflow. The Captain's Coffee, one of the US roasters who has sourced Daniso's lot, describes it as "so exclusive, only 100 bags are produced yearly" — and note that Catalyst Trade, who sources it, is proud to work on precisely this kind of micro-scale relationship that most commercial supply chains cannot accommodate.

The Community Context: Shantawene Kebele

The Shantawene Kebele (village community) where Daniso's Damo farm is located is home to people from the Shantawene Kebena group, speaking Sidaamu and Amharic. Local farmers here are "garden farmers" — growing coffee near their homes from naturally occurring trees, harvesting cherries by hand from plants that represent the ancient pre-cultivation relationship between Ethiopian communities and wild arabica coffee. Daniso's approach is consistent with this heritage: deeply personal, meticulously careful, and producing a cup that reflects both the land and the person who tends it.

"Daniso is a dedicated and highly skilled coffee producer known for crafting exceptional, fully traceable coffees on his farm near Shantewene town — remarkably, he oversees every step of the process, from cultivation to processing." — Nero Scuro Specialty Coffees
