Good Life Coffee: How Finland's Most Decorated Roastery Emerged From the World's Biggest Coffee-Consuming Nation
Founded in Helsinki's Kallio district in 2012 by Lauri Pipinen. 3× Finnish Barista Champion. Roastery launched 2014. Nordics Best Roaster 2024. Filter Coffee of the Year 2024 — Helsinki Coffee Festival.
The Country That Drinks More Coffee Than Anyone
Finland is, by every measure, the world's most coffee-addicted country. Finnish per-capita coffee consumption has consistently ranked first globally — approximately 12 kilograms of coffee per person per year, compared to 4–5 kg in Italy or France and around 4 kg in the United States. Coffee is woven into Finnish culture at a structural level: workplaces are legally required to provide coffee breaks; coffee is served at funerals and weddings; the concept of "kahviaika" (coffee time) is as fundamental to Finnish daily rhythm as fika is in Sweden.
And yet, for most of this coffee-drinking history, quantity vastly outstripped quality. Finland's extraordinary per-capita consumption was built on strong, dark-roasted filter coffee — the kind served in refillable carafes, priced cheaply, and consumed in volume rather than appreciated for nuance. The specialty coffee revolution that transformed Oslo, Copenhagen, and Stockholm was slower to reach Helsinki. Good Life Coffee, founded in Kallio in 2012, was one of the first businesses to explicitly challenge this and to demonstrate that Finland's most fundamental beverage could be something genuinely extraordinary.
Lauri Pipinen: From Barista Champion to Roastery Pioneer
Lauri Pipinen founded Good Life Coffee in Helsinki's Kallio district in 2012 — immediately after winning the Finnish Barista Championship. He was, at that moment, the best competitive barista in Finland, and his instinct was to channel that achievement not into a competition career but into a business that could share what great coffee actually tasted like with a city that had never properly encountered it. "Lauri wanted to show that coffee can have other dimensions than what we were used to in Finland," as one early description puts it. The café opened with a clear philosophy: coffee first, always.
The café operated initially as a multi-roaster showcase — buying the best coffees from the finest Nordic roasters and serving them as the primary act, without Lauri's own roasting competing for attention. After two years of this, the question became inevitable: could they simply roast their own favourite coffees locally, at the same quality level? The answer was yes. In 2014, Good Life Coffee Roasters was founded — and the café chapter gradually closed as the founders realised that roasting was their real passion.
Today, Good Life is led by Lauri Pipinen and Aleksi Kuusijärvi — both former Finnish Barista and Brewers Cup champions — operating the roastery from Heikinlaakso, Helsinki. Between them, they have accumulated multiple national titles and represented Finland at the World Coffee Championships.

"Avoid Bad Life": A Motto That Means Something
Good Life's motto — Avoid Bad Life — is not a catchy slogan deployed for marketing purposes. It is a genuine operational philosophy that the founders describe with characteristic Finnish directness: "We roast good coffee because we want to share the message of good coffee. And we also want to drink good coffee ourselves." The motivation is personal before it is commercial. Lauri and Aleksi built Good Life to make the coffee they wanted to drink accessible to other people who wanted the same thing.
"We are straight forward and honest, no tricks or needless fuzz. We tend to be a bit shy and speak little, but we let our actions talk for us." This self-description is recognisably Finnish — the cultural preference for demonstrated quality over verbal assertion, for action over claim. Good Life's roasting philosophy is an extension of this: source exceptional coffee, roast it carefully, present it honestly, and trust that the cup speaks for itself.
Nordics Best Roaster 2024
In 2024, Good Life Coffee won the Nordic Coffee Fest's Nordics Best Roaster competition — one of the most significant recognition events in Scandinavian specialty coffee. The competition involves roasters from across the Nordic region showcasing their skill and expertise through the coffees they produce. Winning against the full field of Nordic roasters — including Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and other Finnish competitors — placed Good Life at the pinnacle of the region's roasting community.
The same year, they were awarded Filter Coffee of the Year at the Helsinki Coffee Festival. In 2026, they were named a Top 10 finalist at the Nordics Best Roaster competition again, confirming the 2024 win as evidence of sustained excellence rather than a single-season peak.
"Our idea is to roast coffees that are easy to enjoy — they need to be fresh, clean and sweet, highlighting the complexity of flavors that different origins produce." — Lauri Pipinen, Good Life Coffee
