Honduras Coffee: Central America's Largest Producer and Specialty's Most Underrated Origin

Honduras overtook Guatemala as Central America's largest coffee producer in the 2010s — 5.5 million 60-kg bags in 2023/24. It has Marcala, the first Denomination of Origin in all of Latin America (2004), and Finca El Puente, which placed first at the 2016 Honduras Cup of Excellence. Yet it is consistently underrepresented in specialty conversations. This guide explains what Honduras actually is — and why it deserves far more attention.

The Underdog That Became the Region's Largest Producer

Honduras is a story of extraordinary agricultural transformation. As recently as 2000, it was a relatively minor coffee producer with limited international specialty recognition. Two decades of sustained investment in altitude planting, variety improvement, processing infrastructure, and market development made it Central America's largest producer by volume — overtaking Guatemala — and the world's 8th-largest producer. In 2023/24, Honduras produced an estimated 5.5 million 60-kg bags, accounting for approximately one-third of all Central American coffee production.

The country's coffee quality has long been underrepresented in specialty coffee conversations. Several structural factors contributed: landlocked geography with expensive logistics, 20th-century political instability disrupting agricultural investment, and the absence of the institutional marketing infrastructure that Colombia's Juan Valdez brand or Costa Rica's ICAFE provided to their origins. Honduras coffee built its international reputation producer by producer rather than country-wide — and it built it on genuine quality.

Marcala: Latin America's First Denomination of Origin

Marcala — a municipality in La Paz department, in the Montecillos mountain range — is the centre of Honduras's specialty coffee identity. In 2004, Honduras established the Café Marcala Denomination of Origin — the first coffee Denomination of Origin in all of Latin America, predating similar designations in Colombia and Costa Rica. The designation certifies that coffee carrying the Marcala name was grown in the defined geographic area, at qualifying altitude, and processed to IHCAFE quality standards.

The Montecillos growing zone — encompassing Marcala and surrounding municipalities in La Paz, Comayagua, and Intibucá departments — produces Honduras's most internationally recognised specialty coffee. Altitudes of 1,000–1,600 metres, the volcanic mineral richness of the mountain soils, and the temperature differential between day and night at altitude create the slow cherry maturation conditions that produce the caramel, chocolate, and mandarin orange profiles that distinguish Marcala from other Central American origins.

Finca El Puente: Honduras on the World Stage

Finca El Puente is the most internationally celebrated specialty coffee operation in Honduras — 57 farms across approximately 200 hectares in four municipalities (Chinacla, San José, Marcala, and Santa Ana), operated by Marysabel Caballero and Moisés Herrera. In all seven years the farm has entered the Honduras Cup of Excellence, it has placed in the top 10. In 2016, it placed first.

The story of how El Puente reached this position begins in 2006. Stumptown Coffee Roasters' founder Duane Sorenson visited Honduras with Gesha seeds in his pocket — seeds he knew could not clear customs on his return flight. He recognised in Marysabel and Moisés the dedication and attention to detail that the demanding Gesha variety requires. He gave them the seeds and walked the farm with them to identify the best planting site. Stumptown has purchased from El Puente every year since 2006 — a 19-year relationship that is one of specialty coffee's most celebrated producer-roaster partnerships.

Marysabel (fourth-generation coffee farmer, great-grandfather Don Felipe García started in 1907) and Moisés (Guatemalan agronomist who came to Honduras in the 1990s for a research assignment and never left) have developed a variety portfolio that rivals the most innovative Colombian farms: SL28, Gesha, Ethiopian Heirloom, Batian, Java, and Catuaí. The Field Blend — SL28 + Ethiopian Heirloom + Gesha — was born from an accidental combination of sample leftovers one morning at the farm and became one of El Puente's most requested commercial lots.

The Lenca Connection: Indigenous Heritage in the Coffee Lands

The Montecillos specialty zone sits in the ancestral territory of the Lenca people — one of Central America's largest surviving pre-Columbian indigenous nations, with approximately 100,000 people still living in La Paz, Intibucá, Lempira, and Comayagua departments. The Lenca have stewarded the highland agricultural landscape of these mountain ranges for millennia, long predating coffee's arrival. Their territory encompasses the volcanic mountain soils and altitude conditions that produce Honduras's finest specialty coffee. The "Lenca Decaf" lot at BrewFusion (Blog #108) acknowledges this heritage explicitly in its name.
