The Blend Logic: Why Kenya + Watermelon Works

Kenya's SL28 and SL34 carry a genetic legacy tracing back to Sudan Rume (see Blog #15) — producing the vivid blackcurrant and red-berry acidity that defines top Kenyan washed coffees. Ruiru 11 and Batian add yield stability while contributing citrus and berry notes. People Possession paired this with the Los Patios watermelon co-ferment (The Coffee Quest, La Plata, Huila) because Kenya's sharp fruit structure amplifies rather than clashes with watermelon's melon-candy freshness. The Colombia provides the sweet tropical core; the Kenya provides the acidic frame and wild fruit complexity.

🇰🇪 Kenya — Gakuyu-ini Factory

Fully washed. SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, Batian. Central Highlands washing station. Blackcurrant, bold structured acidity — the blend's frame.

🇨🇴 Colombia — Los Patios

Castillo, co-fermented with watermelon. La Plata, Huila (TCQ R&D). Watermelon candy, tropical freshness — the blend's co-fermented core.

"Watermelon candy, yellow melon, guava — a co-fermented washed blend." — People Possession

The Gakuyu-ini Factory processes smallholder cherry in Kenya's standard two-stage washed protocol: overnight dry fermentation, submersion in clean water channels, and raised-bed drying. This produces Kenya's characteristic clean, bright cup that People Possession uses as a counterweight to the Los Patios co-ferment's lush tropical richness.
