Nestor Lasso Ombligon Decaf: The World's Most Celebrated Wild Variety — Without the Caffeine
Ombligon from Finca El Diviso placed 3rd at the 2023 World Barista Championship. The decaf version preserves its wild Ethiopian landrace character — candied cherry, raspberry, passion fruit — making El Diviso's most iconic variety accessible at any hour.

Ombligon: A Recap of the Variety
Ombligon takes its name from the Spanish ombligo — "belly button" — for the navel-like protrusion at the base of its cherry. It is an Ethiopian landrace variety found only in Huila, Colombia, genetically related to Pink Bourbon, Chiroso, and Wush Wush. Jack Simpson used El Diviso Ombligon to place 3rd at the 2023 World Barista Championship; a year earlier, Anthony Douglas won the WBC with El Diviso Sidra. The farm has been on the world stage for consecutive years. For the full Ombligon and El Diviso story, see Blog #3.
Why a Decaf Version Matters
Specialty decaf has historically been the domain of reliable but unexciting varieties — Castillo, Colombia, or other high-yielding lots where the flavour loss from decaffeination is less noticeable. Producing a decaf from Ombligon — a variety whose complex, berry-forward character is among the hardest to preserve through any processing — is a bold statement. It signals that Nestor Lasso and Cata Export believe the variety's aromatic architecture is robust enough to survive the decaffeination process and still deliver a meaningful cup.
The result is one of the most exciting decaf offerings on the specialty market: a coffee that reaches an audience who never could have experienced Ombligon's wild character — people who are caffeine-sensitive, who drink coffee in the evenings, or who simply want the extraordinary without the side effects.
Finca El Diviso: The Farm
Finca El Diviso is a 14.5-hectare farm near Pitalito, Huila, run by brothers Nestor and Adrian Lasso alongside Jhoan Vergara of neighbouring Las Flores. At 1,750 masl, with volcanic soils and native shade trees, it has become Colombia's most internationally recognised experimental farm. Nestor trained through SENA's specialty coffee programme and partnered with Cata Export — founded by former UK baristas Cat and Pierre — to bring El Diviso's rare variety lots to European and global roasters. The variety portfolio includes Ombligon, Sidra, Gesha, Bourbon Ají, Chiroso, Pink Bourbon, Yellow Papayo, and decaf versions of select lots.
