Uraga: One of Ethiopia's Highest-Altitude Growing Areas and Why Guji Is Now a Global Benchmark
Uraga is a woreda in Guji Zone renowned for coffee grown at 2,000–2,300 masl — among the highest elevations in Ethiopia. The Great Rift collective sources here, delivering blueberry, raspberry, and milk chocolate from the peaks of southern Ethiopia.

Uraga: Ethiopia's Summit Coffee
Uraga is a woreda (administrative district) in Ethiopia's Guji Zone, and it occupies a specific place in Ethiopian specialty coffee geography: the top end of the altitude range. Consistently between 2,000 and 2,300 metres above sea level, Uraga's coffee farms sit at elevations that slow cherry maturation to an extraordinary degree — cherries that take an additional two to four weeks longer to ripen than coffees grown at 1,600 metres, accumulating proportionally more sugars and aromatic precursors in that extended time. SNAP Specialty Coffee, whose Raro Boda station is located here, has described Uraga as offering "almost unparalleled quality potential in the country."
Guji Zone's coffees were historically classified as Sidama at the ECX, meaning most Uraga lots were sold without geographic distinction. As buyers developed direct relationships with Guji exporters and producers, the distinctiveness of Uraga's altitude-driven cup character became clear: deeper colour in the cup, more structured body, and a complexity that outlasts the initial aromatics as the cup cools. Natural-processed Uraga lots in particular — with their extended sugar development and controlled drying at altitude — consistently produce the blueberry and raspberry intensity that The Brick Coffee, Rowanberry Coffee, and other roasters describe as "dark berries, currants, juicy citrus."
The Great Rift Collective
The Great Rift Valley defines southern Ethiopia's geography — the tectonic fault that created the highland escarpments, lake systems, and volcanic soils that make Ethiopia's southern coffee-growing regions so distinctive. "Great Rift" as a sourcing identity positions Uraga's coffee within that geological story: the altitude, the mineral soils, and the forest ecosystem all trace back to the same tectonic forces that shaped this landscape over millions of years. The collective sources from smallholder farmers in Uraga's kebele communities, aggregating high-altitude cherry into traceable lots processed through controlled natural protocols.
