Description
Basha Bekele is a coffee from Badigalo, the new highest altitude site of this renowned producer from Bensa, Sidama.
This is the first year SEY Coffee has worked with Badigalo, and the quality of the lot has been exceptional. Grown at 2,300 MASL, this coffee offers a particular expression of the 74158 variety.
Basha Bekele is a prominent producer from Bensa who took first place in the Cup of Excellence in 2024. SEY's work in Bensa has been ongoing for several years and continues to provide some of their highest-scoring coffees.
In the cup, we find kiwi, orange blossom, and guava, creating a fruity, floral, and expressive profile.
Process
Cherries are hand-picked at their optimal ripeness and then floated to remove defects.
They are then pulped as quickly as possible, intentionally leaving a small amount of mucilage.
The coffee is dried on beds protected from the sun, retaining the mucilage for three days until it reaches approximately 10% moisture.
About variety 74158
74158 is one of the varieties developed by Ethiopia's Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC).
It was approved for distribution in 1979 and comes from the Metu Bishari selections, originally collected from mother plants in the Metu area of Illuababora.
The variety was selected for its high yield potential and resistance to coffee berry disease.
