Description

This coffee comes from Taferi Kela, in the Sidama region of Ethiopia, and reaches us through Bette Buna, an initiative deeply rooted in the local community.

The name Bette Buna literally means “House of Coffee,” and reflects its mission to strengthen the well-being of the area's farmers. The organization was founded after Grandfather Syoum and Grandmother Emame decided to entrust the management of the farm and the development of the community to Dawit and Hester, who have worked to improve the quality of the coffee and the living conditions of the producers in Taferi Kela.

Although this area shares a mountain range with other, more well-known coffee-growing regions of Sidama, it remained virtually unknown to the international market for many years. Today, thanks to Bette Buna's work, farmers receive support to improve soil fertility, restore agroforestry systems, and refine the selection of ripe cherries, resulting in better quality and higher incomes for farming families.

One of its most important initiatives is the annual distribution of over 350,000 climate-adapted seedlings, which significantly contributes to improving the local economy in a region where family incomes are very limited. Furthermore, the organization promotes equal employment opportunities, offering jobs to people with disabilities and traditionally marginalized groups.

Regarding processing, this batch follows the classic Ethiopian washed method. The cherries are pulped and fermented for 24 to 36 hours in concrete tanks with surface water, creating a low-oxygen environment. They are then washed to remove the mucilage and dried for 8 to 15 days on raised African beds before resting in a cellar to stabilize the bean moisture content.

In the cup, this coffee presents a sweet, floral and structured profile, with notes of blackberries, nectarine, panela and rose, and a bright acidity typical of high altitude coffees from Sidama.
