Description

Description

Malaki Estate is a high-altitude farm in Kiambu, one of the most interesting coffee regions in central Kenya. This is the first year SEY Coffee has worked with Florence and Jessica Marigi.

In the cup, we find a dark fruit profile with notes of blackcurrant, rhubarb, and hibiscus. The combination provides an intense and characteristic expression of high-altitude Kenyan coffees.

Malaki Estate is managed by Florence and her daughter Jessica. It was originally planted in 1969 by Edward Marigi, Florence's husband, and is one of the few farms in Kiambu that has never introduced hybrid varieties, maintaining the oldest traditional Kenyan selections.

The farm is located on the western slopes of the Aberdare Range and, in addition to coffee, produces macadamias and avocados.

Process

Cherries are hand-picked at their optimal ripeness and then floated to remove defects.

They are pulped on the same day of harvest and dry fermented for 36–48 hours.

Afterward, the coffee is dried on raised beds until it reaches approximately 10% moisture.

About the Field Blend

SEY Coffee believes this lot is entirely composed of Kenya's main SL varieties.

However, recent genetic analyses conducted on other farms are challenging some of the traditional ideas about the varieties actually grown in Kenya.

Research is ongoing, and new results will help to better understand the genetics of these coffees.
