Description

This coffee comes from Ruera Estate, a coffee plantation located in Juja Sub-County, Kiambu County, Kenya. Ruera Estate is located approximately 15 km from Ruiru town, along the Kiganjo road. It spans 190.31 hectares and is planted with Ruiru 11, SL 28, K7, and Batian varieties, on red volcanic soils and a landscape of low, gently sloping hills. The cherries are grown at an altitude of 1,577 meters above sea level.

The estate has generated employment for over 1,000 people in the rural area throughout the entire coffee production process. The estate's natural lot was awarded 1st place in the Natural Coffees category at the Kenya National Taste of Harvest 2024-2025 competition.

The estate is managed by Coffee Management Services Ltd (CMS), a leading agribusiness service provider for Kenya and the East African region. Since 2006, CMS has focused on providing agricultural and financial services, promoting sustainable coffee production in the region. CMS agronomists visit the estate regularly, allowing for constant communication with producers, continuous feedback on coffee quality, and ongoing investment in estate management and processing improvements.

Workers hand-pick the cherries and transport them to the wet mill for processing. The cherries are carefully sorted and pulped using Pinhalense and Mackinnon pulpers. Rewetting of dry coffee and over-fermentation are avoided at all times.

Drying aims to reduce the moisture content of the beans for safe storage and improved quality. Well-dried beans are kept between 10-11% moisture and are dried on outdoor drying beds, using natural heat.

In the cup, it stands out with notes of blackcurrant, gooseberry, and hibiscus.
