Description

Thunguri is a coffee from Kirinyaga, Kenya, produced by Kibirigwi Factory and grown between 1,700 and 1,800 meters above sea level. It comes from one of the most renowned areas in the country for the consistency and quality of its washed coffee profiles, where the coffee grows on deep, well-drained, red volcanic soils.

The station is part of the Kibirigwi Farmers Cooperative, which brings together seven factories in the region. Currently, Thunguri has around 1,500 active small-scale producers, who work plots of approximately half a hectare, combining coffee with crops such as macadamia nuts, bananas, beans, tea, and corn.

The harvest is done manually and selectively, delivering only ripe cherries at the harvest season. There, the coffee undergoes a traditional Kenyan washed process, including pulping, flotation sorting, a first fermentation of about 24 hours, washing, a second fermentation of between 12 and 24 hours, and a final soak in clean water. This last step, characteristic of many Kenyan coffees, promotes the development of the bright acidity and aromatic complexity that make this origin so recognizable.

Next, the coffee is dried on raised African drying tables, first in thin layers to quickly reduce some of the moisture, and then in thicker layers for several days until it reaches the optimal point. Finally, the parchment rests in storage until it stabilizes before being exported.

In the cup, Thunguri offers a clean, expressive, and structured profile, with strawberry, raspberry, bergamot, and an elegant black tea background. A bright and sophisticated coffee that clearly reflects Kirinyaga's classic style.
